COUNTIF (what it does, syntax and example)
Counting functions area count of items in a list that concord to a certain criteria. There are a lot of them, but in this text we are only explaining countif and countifs. First of all, countif is a function to count items in a list, that match a criteria. You use it to look for a certain thing (numbers, names, etc. ) that repeats itself, in a specific range of things. For example: You have a column with different countries, and some are repeated.  But you want to know how many times Washington appears. Start with an equal sign. Then write countif in it, open brackets and select the column with all the countries in it. You do that, because, by marking the whole column, you select the place where the computer should look for Washington. Afterwards write a comma and select the Word (now Washington) that you are looking for. With this you select what the computer should look for in the before selected column. To finish, close the brackets and the result will appear. Example: =countif (C4:C22,A11).
